Johannesburg is severely underrated as a tourist destination. This could be
because it has no beaches, no snow-capped mountains, and no ancient buildings —
it is only about 124 years old. But Johannesburg has something else. Like New
York, San Francisco, or any modern town that attracts large numbers of tourists,
Johannesburg is a cultural and industrial centre, a place where people live and
work. And like any place where people need to get away from their day-to-day
routine, it has an enormous array of entertainment and cultural events running
day and night to help people forget the humdrum of their daily lives.
Johannesburg is also the scene of the fall of the abominable Apartheid system
which kept millions of people oppressed for four decades, and the site of the
African Union Parliament. So Johannesburg is not only a cultural centre, but it
is also politically the most significant city on the continent, and the most
economically powerful. Furthermore, the human race evolved in the Johannesburg
area; for this reason, it is called the 'Cradle of Humankind'. So there are many
reasons to visit.
This book gives a personalised introduction to South Africa and Johannesburg in particular. It covers all the scenic things to see and visit in Johannesburg and its surrounding towns. It provides addresses, phone numbers and GPS coordinates of each tourist attraction and tries to provide a photograph as well where possible, so that you can decide easily which things to see, and find them easily too. The new edition (2011) includes more restaurants, a daily itinerary based on how many days you have available to stay, and updated information in most chapters. |
